A great piece is an investment; care is the interest it pays. Five rules from the atelier for keeping occasionwear at opening-night standard.
1 · Dry-clean, but rarely
Clean after wearing, not after hanging. Between events, air the piece inside-out for a day instead — over-cleaning ages fabric faster than wear does.
2 · Steam, never iron, the delicate
Direct heat flattens texture and glazes fibres. A garment steamer (or the bathroom-steam trick while you shower) relaxes creases without casualties.
3 · Shaped hangers for structured shoulders
A structured shoulder on a wire hanger is a slow tragedy. Shaped or padded hangers preserve the line the tailoring worked so hard for.
4 · Beading and embellishment travel face-in
Fold embellished pieces inward with tissue between layers; sequins scratch their neighbours in a suitcase.
5 · Store dark, dry, breathing
Cotton garment bags over plastic; sunlight fades, and trapped humidity is Lagos’s quiet enemy. Give the piece room to breathe and it will outlast the occasion it was made for — and be ready for the next one.
